How the split curve works

Even pacing uses one constant pace. Negative or positive splits use a linear pace curve that satisfies both your chosen halfway clock share and your exact finish time.

What stop buffer means

A stop buffer reserves clock time for aid stations or brief pauses. It is distributed by distance for planning; your actual stops may happen at different points on the course.

Common pace-chart questions

What pace is a 2-hour half marathon?

A 2:00:00 half marathon requires an exact average of about 5:41 per kilometer or 9:09 per mile. Use the 2:00 quick goal above to generate every split.

Why does multiplying the displayed pace sometimes miss by a few seconds?

The displayed pace is rounded to a whole second. The split engine keeps the unrounded pace, so its finish time stays exact even when the visible pace is one second higher or lower.

Should I use even or negative splits?

Even splits are the simplest plan. A negative split starts slightly slower and finishes faster. Choose a profile you have practiced and adjust for the real course, conditions, and how you feel on race day.

Can I use this as a pace band?

Yes. Choose “Print pace band” to get a narrow layout with your target, primary pace, and key markers. Your browser can print it or save it as a PDF.

Your pace calculations stay in your browser. This site does not require an account and does not send your goal time, pace, split strategy, or stop buffer to an application database.

Local data

The site may save your preferred unit in local storage. Shared URLs include the plan settings you choose so another browser can recreate the same chart. A service worker may cache the site’s own files for offline use.

Infrastructure data

Distance constants

Even pace

Average pace equals available moving time divided by race distance. With no stop buffer, moving time and finish-clock time are the same.

Continuous split profile

The pace at distance x is modeled as p(x) = a + bx. The coefficients are chosen so the integral over the full course equals the target moving time and the integral through halfway matches the selected first-half clock share.

Stop buffer

Stop seconds are distributed in proportion to distance. Half of the buffer is therefore assigned before halfway and half after halfway. This keeps the selected half split and finish clock exact while revealing the faster moving pace required.

Rounding

Calculations retain fractional seconds. Display values round to the nearest second. The final split is pinned to the exact target to prevent visible accumulation drift.
